Hutchings-Koehler family papers, 1699-1916.

Herman Koehler's papers include letters from relatives in the United States and Germany, and from his children. Also included are Koehler's recipes for medicinal candies and remedies, and an account of his trip from Germany to Baltimore, Maryland, in 1818-1819. Aurora and Septima Koehler's papers include journals (1863, 1868-1875, and 1867-1869). Their correspondence includes letters associated with their teaching and missionary work. Other items include Septima's writings on South Dakota Native Americans, class register books, and other educational materials. Hutchings family papers include letters to Robert Hutchings from his parents and school friends (1888-1890), Matilda Hutching's poems and essays, and an essay by William Hutchings on the treatment of tuberculosis. Photographs include images of Koeher family members.

William Daviess Hutchings (1825-1903) was born in Kentucky and practiced medicine in Wooster, and later Lexington, Scott County, Ind. He married Mathilda Koehler in 1861 and the union bore at least three children: Frederick, Robert, and Agnes. He served in the Indiana Legislature in 1869,and was a member of the Board of Pension Examiners. He died in Madison, Ind. From the description of Papers, 1855-1970.
